Projects and activities developed in the areas of nuclear safety, radiological and physical protection, prioritizing regional and national needs, aimed at promoting the exchange of experiences and knowledge to contribute to the strengthening of the capacity and competence of the members of the association.
In 2003, the interest in generating greater knowledge and harmonizing practices among its members arose through the development of projects and activities of common interest within a Technical Program, defined in the FORO Statute, and in close collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the scientific-technical reference of the association.
Since the launching of the FORO Technical Program, a significant number of projects or activities have been managed, with the participation of several experts from the region and a budget of over one million euros. Although during the development of FORO projects and activities information is shared within the private sphere of the participating members, all the products generated by the FORO are public and available on its portal, the RED (www.foroiberam.org) for anyone interested. In addition, numerous results are being published by the IAEA in the form of joint FORO-IAEA technical documents (TecDoc), and have been presented at the most important international conferences of the regulatory sector.
Another way of contributing to global safety has been the use of the results of the FORO Technical Program in the development of IAEA safety guides, or to incorporate them into the agenda of training and capacity building courses and workshops aimed at both the regulator and the regulated. FORO develops its Technical Program of regulatory interest based on the principles of innovation, equity, effectiveness, efficiency, thoroughness, consistency and sustainability, and in line with FORO's strategic guidelines and action plan, approved by its Plenary, its governing body.
FORO's contribution to radiation protection and nuclear safety, as well as the value of its model and Technical Program have been recognized by the IAEA, the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB), the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA), the Pan American (PAHO) and World Health Organizations (WHO), and other international and regional organizations and associations. FORO's cooperation with these institutions and others of interest is a strategic objective that guides the work of the association. Through this cooperation, FORO verifies that its projects are innovative, gathers information to make its technical program more efficient, and disseminates its results to other countries in the region and other parts of the world. In doing so, FORO seeks to promote a beneficial exchange of experience and knowledge in key areas of radiation protection and nuclear safety and security in areas of interest, relevance and topicality.
